BOOSHWA - EXCERPT 2

Artwork:  Panel excerpt from "Booshwa" © 2009, Rick Grimes.

GRIMES: "One of many such little experiments in 'how much is enough?' For those interested few, the transcribed notes, (since brief), from my initial dream, October 1, 1991:

too rough with 'annoying' kitten...covering (to get rid of), boxing and reboxing...{mostly in kitchen}...Ralph Waite, as 'John Walton' doesn't recommend this...kitten dies...ants will/get on...feel bad...shoulda been nicer.

I didn't know then just how I would end "Booshwa", so was left to solve that this July. The dream itself was no doubt drawing from a childhood incident. Possibly when I was six. Someone on my grandparents' farm (in Kentucky) found a blue-eyed kitten abandoned by its mother. Not an atypical experience on a farm, no one took special care to feed it, or perhaps it just could not drink anything else yet. We put it in a cardboard box, but without any wrapping, and I left it out on the metal glider seat overnight. After what turned out to be a cool snap, the next morning I found the kitten dead stiff .

Its mother was not a house cat nor a pet, just wild, and my granma was not accustomed to having pets in the house. I certainly didn't know what I was doing. In case any animal lovers out there are blowing a knob at the neglect of all this. I thought I loved 'em, too.Was my first dead body. 'Feel bad...shoulda been nicer.' "  [RG] 11/8/09

II)  Panel excerpt from Rick's CRIMEFIGHTER-featured "Joe Head" marginal strip, also with additional comments.

- And to the OTHER WORKS section (again courtesy of Grimes):

III)  Colour scan of Rick's tooled leather 'portrait' of his "Sicky Claws"-era character, 'Nudolph' with additional comments.

IV)  Rick's 1977 Kubert Art School lettering assignment, "Lobster Parapie".

3)  Thoughts on Rick's work from cartoonists Jake Kujava and Vincent Wright have now been added to the COMMENTS page.

TOO MANY THRIPEYS - PG. 8 PREVIEW (2009)

Artwork © 2009, Rick Grimes.

GRIMES:  "I made a bit of a faux pas with this page. The real Thripey got pushed out by storytelling necessities. The only evidence of the Puzz Fundles themselves is the back of Primitive Iggy's head in panel two. Not a good practice to have the main characters 'absent' from their own farce. By the way, I found yet more Rick Grimeses on FaceBook, and am pleased to report a total lack of interest in or communication with any of them. The copycatting bums!!"

2)  The following colour photo xerox (with related comments) of Rick's 'Dachie' puppet appeared on the front cover of Rick and Larry Loc's DOG*STAR FUNNIES #2 (1991). To view said magazine's cover in question, please see the DOG*STAR-centric PUBLISHED WORKS - 2 gallery.

DACHIE

GRIMES:  "'Dachie' puppet a real, manufactured, assembly line toy. His name is machine-typepressed into his neck, and is the name his creator/s bestowed upon him. He was originally my sister's. It still has a barking' squeaker, (spring-operated, in a polka dot 'gullet sack' sewn to the neck of and hidden under it's 'handgown'/ 'gloveshirt'?), that we wore out when we were kids. Silenced forever, except for a plasticky cricketing noise, he has had a 'checkered' past, having spent some few years in the garage attic. He now gathers dust in my room. As do I. Oh, and I did, however, create the 'deliciously' matching cookies."   -- RG (September 21st, 2009).

GRIMES:  "This is Bissette & Veitch's sea monkey story from epic magazine. Not only do I love the big green monkey portraits, note the little Weird Dick head on the yellow 'Putney', (Vermont town), T shirt on the pilot. Another one of those cameos mentioned. Probly drawn initially by Veitch, but looks like Bissette inked. Guess the little 'stem' is his cigar, not a neck. Has an ashline."  -- RG (May 27th, 2009).

UPDATES! (25/05/2009) - Some thoughts on Grimes courtesy of a fellow named 'Namey'... below:

"Man I just wish so much there was a book of all Rick Grimes' work in my hands someday as I can't really enjoy reading comics off a computer display at least not compared to the traditional method, especially as my damn machine's so hair-greyingly slow. But keep up your great work with your site; I'll be coming by every now and then for sure. And hey I must ask: might there be any new plans for an actual collection? For there should be!"

(19/5/2009) - Just added two new "Grimey Recommendations" pieces - "For The Would Be 'Dream' Storyteller..." +  "Bandage Man! Bandage Man!!" - to the RECOMMENDED - 1 page (listed as the 4th & 5th entries in the initial "If You Asked Me" section).

1)  Further 'Recommended' pieces courtesy of Grimes will soon be added to the RECOMMENDED - 1 section.

2)  An older previously unpublished Grimes 'dream' text piece (dated 11/17/81) titled, "An Ah Got Plans Fer All of 'em", will also soon be added to the site.

TOO MANY THRIPEYS - PREVIEW (2009)

Artwork © 2009, Rick Grimes.

GRIMES:  "Early this month, (April), I was doing my first bit of 'egosurfing', when, to my amazement i found that not only is there a (possibly deliberate?) zombie comic book character with my name, there are also at least twenty-five other Rick Grimeses currently alive in the world.

"Floored, (or 'ceilinged'), i went on to learn of one British fellow, 'Something' Rick Grimes who has a son , also named Rick Grimes. They even have some family shots up.

"Even as a kid, I was never one to believe the rather ridiculous, naive and poorly thought out little gamelike pronouncement that everybody has a double somewhere in the world. Such a ludicrous design in this world would halve the total population of distinctly unique individuals, and this Earth is nothing if not full of uniqueness.

"Maybe some ultra-dimensional and fleeting visionary incursion of some surlier, (if that's possible), me.

"Maybe a lookalike---even one person with my name, but twenty-five??

"I realize I'm no B. Janglo Ambercromby, but, I ain't no Joe Smith neither!

"To top all this, the new story I had then just begun working on, called, "Too Many Thripeys", is about...well, guess.

"And my sister had, within only a few days of this surfing jazz, told me she'd had an uncommonplace dream of seeing two of me, practically in the same room, only feet or minutes apart.

"After I told her of my new 'family' of namesakes, she joked, "I told you not to put your monitor in front of that mirror!"

"Hope they're all having a good time. We should all have an industrial, reunion-style picnic. A 'ricknic' , if we will.

"Then, as usual, I can be the one who fails to attend."  -- (RG? 4/30/09)

1)  Received the following message regarding Rick Grimes by fellow comics artist and former Kubert art school classmate, Ken Feduniewicz:

"I was going to suggest an entry for the Name-the-Grimes-21st-Century-Coffeetable-Anthology....(get ready, here it comes)..."High Grimes and Misdemeanors"."

- Thanks for the kind words Ken! (RH).

2)  Here is a three-part comparison piece featuring:  1)  Rick's 1976 illustration "Elly" (which first appeared in the Kubert art school's 1976 class zine PARADE OF GORE, later republished in issue #2 of Steve Bissette's infamous horror anthology TABOO (Tundra Publishing).  2)  The original inspiration behind 'Elly'; Jose Antonio Domingo's 'demon' art from Marvel's Monsters Unleashed #10 front cover. And lastly,  3)  Clive Barker's similar looking demon, which appeared in TABOO #1.

5)  Regarding updates, etc. made to this site, from now Rick's contributions will now be 'tagged' with either RG - or - GRIMES. All other text in updates, etc. will be added for the most part, by myself, Ryan H. (RH) - this also goes for the featured 'fun' video clips, courtesy of youtube.com.

April 3rd, 2009

1)  Last Saturday (March 29th, 2009), I added to this fan site, the complete work of Rick Grimes as featured in Issues 1 & 2 of artist Larry Loc's DOG*STAR FUNNIES zines (circa 1987 and 1991, respectively). I have since been given the OK by Larry, to also present his work from both issues here on this site. Larry's pages are now featured, (along with Grimes work) in the PUBLISHED WORKS - 2 gallery, as originally appears in both DOG*STAR FUNNIES issues. My thanks to Larry for kindly allowing his work to appear on this fan site, and for kindly mentioning this site in a recent DOG*STAR FUNNIES-related blog post at http://www.agni-animation.com/blog/index.html.

2)  Meant to add the following to this site earlier, though such information (regarding Grimes' 1977 "The Seed of Shock" text story, and unreleased "The Bromomaniaks" two-page strip) unfortunately got overlooked upon first receiving from Rick Grimes in February 2009 (now added to the respective pages in PUBLISHED WORKS - 1 gallery, and the OTHER WORKS gallery):

GRIMES:  "The Bromomaniaks. Thought it would be a hoot to rub both pages if you’re ok with it. (Check panel 2, page 2). Was submitted to LAST GASP in the mid 90s. Got no reply. Of all places... Guess the anthology editor sent to or somebody put off by the ‘chocks’ panel. (When I was a kid there used to be a vitamin called ‘Chocks’, their slogan "Pop a Chocks" said in borderline hysteria). Not long before there had been some seizures of mail order books of ‘doubtful’ content, in Canada. Maybe the publishers them were more chicken. I always thought I did good on the art. (Yet again my attempt to return to tighter work). And think it’s funny and deserves to be seen. If you’re running ‘full blown’ "Elly" and such like might as well let you. "Maybe the last ‘dick joke’ I use. They bring me ‘bad luck’!"  -- February 16th, 2009.

GRIMES:  ""The SEED of SHOCK" was supposed to read: Where the old alien gets up to leave and it says 'the key / exhilarated' is where line broke wrong. Story actually is supposed to end where 'Skael' puts his hand to his face, like in the picture. "The miscopied (which I was too slack then to double check ahead of time, let alone just do myself) version, as printed, tho' intelligible actually is less preferable to me as it leaves the impression that the other alien's death means nothing at all to Skael, that he is just continuing on to another world. Whereas its supposed to be a culminating failure - the death ever caused by his interpenetrating the other's reality. "And, as printed, the so called ending is really the setting for where the alien is about to die. "Clear as mud and about as important. "Was better rereading it 'today' than thought it was. That cold do that good. Bissette said at the time he didn't think I'd caught it as well as the way I had told it to him, and Fred, before ever writing it. But, then again, I didn't broadcast the error alot after it was printed. Don't even know if anyone ever realised it, or who I told."  -- February 16th, 2009.

March 29th, 2009

1)  Last Thursday (March 26th, 2009), I received my latest extensive package from Rick Grimes, which included copies of both issues of Larry Loc - http://www.agni-animation.com/blog/index.html - 's DOG*STAR FUNNIES zine, circa 1987 (issue #1) and 1991 (the Grimes-heavy, issue #2), respectively. Rick contributed various original pieces both issues to artist Larry Loc's xerox zine. The following work by Grimes, as featured in both zines, has now been added to the PUBLISHED WORKS - 2 gallery. My thanks, as always, to Rick for kindly passing on such material to present here on this site; and to Larry Loc for previous assistance.

DOG*STAR FUNNIES #1 (1987):

I)  "Glycerous Aquarium Footstool" (republished later in 1991's TABOO ESPECIAL)

II)  Artwork for M.W. (Grit) Thomas, Jr.'s "A Children's Story" (1987).

DOG*STAR FUNNIES #2  (1991):

I)  DOG*STAR FUNNIES front cover (1991 - devised with Larry Loc).

II)  "Intra-Daschund" (1991 - cowritten with Larry Loc).

III)   "Under The Rug" (1988).

IV)  "Anne, Thuh Beep Goze Onn!" (1988).

V)  "Camera Shy" (1987).

VI)  "Dine with Dachie" (1991).

VII)  "Halfbaked Hockey" (featuring Larry Loc's original characters, 'the Acid Dwarf' and 'Cowpie' © Larry Loc) (1990).

VIII)  "In Over Their Heads" (1988).

IX)  "Near Disaster" (1988).

X)  Safe From Dachau" (1991).

XI)  'Shamus McRawhole' (1987/1966).

XII)  "Wasting Time" (1988).

XIII)  "Chunky Tooth" (1990).

XIV)  'Pig' (1990).

-  Artwork/strips © 1987 - 1991, Rick Grimes.  ("Intra-Dachshund" © 1987, Larry Loc and Rick Grimes - Rick's "Halfbaked Hockey" features Larry Loc's original characters, "the Acid Dwarf" and "Cowpie" © Larry Loc).  DOG*STAR FUNNIES #1 front cover © 1987, Larry Loc.  DOG*STAR FUNNIES #2 front cover © 1987, Larry Loc and Rick Grimes.

- Also included in Rick's most recent package, were the following items:

I)  Updated comments regarding several of his stories (inc. "Maniac Island", "sick animal", and "Pills For Miss Betsy", among others). These comments have now been added to the strips/stories respective pages (for TABOO-related comments, visit the PUBLISHED WORKS - 3 gallery).

II)  A childhood drawing circa 1966 or 1967 (now added to the OTHER WORKS gallery).

III)  A 'one panel' piece from 1981 titled, "Critters" (which you can now view below - and also in the OTHER WORKS gallery):

CRITTERS

Artwork:  "Critters" © 1981, Rick Grimes.

GRIMES:  "The 'Critters' panel, deliberately done in the more careful manner of other phases of that period, presents a character (tho' too cumbersome to appear often ot since) belonging wholly to that other world I keep referring to of 'Weird Dick & His Friends", [Stinely, etc.]. As with some of them, the 'toy' bear character was born of internal flashes, usually before sleep; the, pushed further along into intelligibility, (of a sort).

"The original was given to someone. I have only a small, same size zerox in black & white. The original, wherever it may be now, was colored with pencils. The sailor suit is green with white trim. The bear orange. Galoshes probably red. Based on bubble bath toys of the 60s, that used to have plastic bodies with screw on caps for what amounted to neck stems. And heads of polystyrene with printed highlights.

"Originally the whole 'critters' notion was some take on Ripley style "Believe It or Not" panel one could in pebble board and present takes on 'cryptozoologicals' like the Lock Ness monster and my initial jokey notion of showing it as a dinosaur, yes, but one that filled the Loch's depths, that is standing on the bottom. But, I quickly took things else where. In the 80s there was an animal comic with the same title; so sort of gave up on the whole idea."  -- Rick Grimes (March 15th, 2009).

3)  A new section for LOST ARTWORK has also now been added to the site. In this section, Rick details various original art pages of his that have gone missing over the years, inc. "President 'Doosh' Quimby" (TABOO #8, 1995), "These Things Happen" (TABOO #4, 1990), and "Grue Love" (TABOO #9, 1995). If anyone does indeed know of where such pages have ultimately ended up, please contact me at:  dogginfo@gmail.com.

GRIMES:  "If anyone ever comes across, (so to speak), these pages or sees them for sale on a convention table or ebay, lemme know. I might even pay to have 'em back, if not too 'dear', some questions asked! Just want you, the 'discerning' art buyer to know, nobody else was given or has the right to them. Verbally or otherwise. I'd almost rather they be in the Atlantic Ocean with my great great gran'ma than in some snotty bastard's collection. Or even a friendly bastard. Unless he was to sell it to me cheap, or 'donate' it to my museum of pitiful errors..."  -- Rick Grimes (March 15th, 2009).

4)  A week and a half or so ago (see last update), I posted an awesome Rick Veitch - www.rickveitch.com - commission piece on this fan site, featuring Rick Grimes' perennial characters, the 'Puzz Fundles'. The original artwork (11" x 13.5" pen and ink on illustration board) has since been coloured by professional freelance (and well-published) comic book colourist Randy 'Sarge' Sargent, and a sample of which is now featured below. A portfolio of the Sarge's fine colour work can be viewed here: www.randysargent.net/ (Sarge's Coloring Book). To those interested in having black and white commission or sketch art coloured, Randy's work comes highly recommended! Many thanks, Sarge. Artwork quality somewhat lost with size reduction.

1)  First, I, Ryan H., would like to thank Rick Veitch for kindly mentioning this site on his own (excellent) website/blog - www.rickveitch.com - in a March 20 blog entry titled, The Kafka of Comix. Rick Veitch, as you may know, is one of the renowned greats in the comix world, and is currently taking on commissions - which I highly recommend! Below, you will find Veitch's wonderful 'Puzz Fundles' piece I had commissioned a couple weeks ago - thank you Rick for both the site mention and the ace artwork!

2)  Received word today from the man himself, Rick Grimes, that he will soon be officially online, as he has now purchased a computer and is keen to join the world of internetting (?).Also received word from Rick's old pal, Larry Loc, with news on a possible look-see of Rick and Larry's rare DOG*STAR FUNNIES material. Will post further details when available.

March 13th, 2009

Added the following Grimes-related items to various areas of the site:

I)  Rick's 'Little Hydrey' illustration from 1992, as featured in TABOO #6 (this illustration was, in part, inspiration for Al Columbia's "The Bloodtclot Boy"):

Little Hydrey

II)  Cameo appearances of Grimes' 'Sicky Claws' gang (as featured in "Sicky Claws Conquers the Weird Dicks", feat. Chatteredy Cathy Doll, Nudolph The Naked Reindeer, Clowny, Seymour, Brown Pneumonia: the Hopping Mummy, and Skinnever Skull) as featured in Grimes' "The Puzz Fundles" (Thripey Skake, Von Sticky, Meemo, Primitive Iggy, Malloon, Gluggigla, and Gufshca), published in Rick Veitch's THE ONE comic book series. Also, added Grimes' poster of Veitch's THE ONE, as featured in #6.

1)  Here is an illustration I commissioned renowned comics artist/writer (and long-time Rick Grimes pal) Rick Veitch - www.rickveitch.com - to draw, featuring Grimes' most infamous creations, the 'Puzz Fundles' . My thanks to Rick V. for creating this awesome piece of art for me, and to Rick G. for allowing his characters for use in such a fine work of art as this. Also, various other earlier 'published' drawings of Grimes' characters by Rick Vietch can also be seen in previous updates below.

2)  A few recent words from Rick Grimes with regards to new strips and other influences on his work over the years:

I)  GRIMES:  "I am getting a computer (incl. graphic tablet, etc.) and am in fine enough fettle and back to the drawing board after a prolonged tour of hospitals and home care for my mom. I've (also) been "officially" myopic for several years now, have graduated bifocals and have to ink with a magnifying glass. Well, not with the magnifying glass. But, holding it. Awkward nuisance. For some reason, I can still draw without one, but can't see, later, where to put the tip of the pen or brush."  -- February 13th, 2009.

II)  GRIMES:  "Jay Kinney's "BLACK CAT CITY" (in DR. WIRTHAMS COMIX AND STORIES #5/6) was a pivotal story for me then (written August 1987) in some of my approaches to storytelling, ultimately in TABOO. I wrote a poetry style object-setting-flow story of some five pages or so, some year or other called BEEF BAYONETS; never did any art for it. But, it was perhaps closest to Jay's story's inspiration and also probly has more in common with Van Vliet music than later TABOO pieces some see Beefheart in snippets (?) of. Black Cat City was pivotal for me, and I still believe I live there sometimes."  -- January 27th, 2009.

February 27th, 2009

1)  Yesterday I received another lengthy reply from Rick Grimes with regards to this fan site, and was generously presented with yet another batch of interesting and wonderful items to add to this site. Such items have now been added to both the following galleries, and they include the following:

PUBLISHED WORKS - 1

I)  An amusing Abraham Lincoln drawing Rick drew when he was only 14 years old for the Shreveport local newspaper, circa 1973. (See below).

II)  Rick's "Another Duck" strip from 1977's THE JOURNAL OF POPULAR CULTURE #1.

PUBLISHED WORKS - 4

III)  Both "Heredity" (also feat. 'Little Numbleschitz') and "Girlilla" from Mark Martin's HYENA series (1992 - issues #2 and #4, respectively).

IV)  Improved scans of both RARE BIT FIENDS strips, "Frickles" and "Penny Boo".

OTHER WORKS

V)  A sketch Rick drew of himself for a Kubert Art school letterhead assignment (with arm outstretched), circa 1976/77.

VI)  The front cover of the aborted Rick Grimes collection, GOOZLE KOMMIX, circa 1994. (See below).

VII)  A previously unpublished two page strip, titled "The Bromomaniaks".

VIII)  The front cover of a comic which never saw publication, titled "Poodles from Uranus" (in both B & W and colour).

IX)  A flyer featuring 'Dolly' that Rick sent friends, circa 1996.

2)  During Rick Grimes' "The Puzz Fundles" six strip run in renowned cartoonist Rick Veitch's - www.rickveitch.com - six-issue comic mini-series, THE ONE, Veitch himself drew characters from Grimes' infamous one-pagers as small pieces featured on 5 out of the 6 covers for the series; also including a panel featuring these oddballs within his actual "The One" story. Veitch's drawings of the 'Puzz Fundles' can now be viewed in the one hit, below - my thanks to both Rick's for kindly allowing this.

3)  A couple days ago, I contacted former Joe Kubert School of Cartoon & Graphic Art student Rick Taylor (Kubert School 1976-1977) with regards to Grimes, and received the following reply (February 25th, 2009):

"Rick Grimes...wow does that name bring back some memories. As I recall Rick was one of the younger guys like me (then) who attended the first two years at the Kubert school or 'Kubie U' as we referred to it in those days. Even then, Rick's unique sense of humor stood out. The school was an explosion of creativity and Rick was one of those guys who sometime said more by the things he didn't say. I remember his sense of directness and honesty. It's great to knowing he has made a place for himself and his work has definitely left a mark. Cheers, sir."

- I must also mention the fact that Rick Taylor did both the lettering and logo work for Grimes' "The Seed of Shock" text story, as featured in 1977's PARADE OF GORE.

4)  Illustration as featured in 1989's TABOO #3 introduction page for Grimes' "Cactus Water":

5)  PUZZ-FUNDLES (CANADIAN PUNK ROCK BAND, 1985 - 1987)

Puzz-Fundles were a Canadian punk rock band active from 1985 to 1987 named after Rick's infamous cartoon characters, 'The Puzz Fundles' (featured in Rick Veitch's THE ONE series). The group consisted of Laurie Wedge (Bass), Mike Timmins (Guitar/Vocals), and Pete Timmins (Drums). Puzz-Fundles had no official releases, though did record the following:  The Basement Tapes (1986), and Live at Key West (1987).

1)  First, I Ryan H., would like to big thank you Stephen R. Bissette - www.srbissette.com - for generously sending me the following Grimes-related items: MANTICORE #1 (Fall 1976), and Fred Greenberg's OMNIBUS #1 (February 1978) and #2 (April 1978). Many thanks Steve, I appreciate this very much!!

Both Grimes' 'Kriturz' pieces can now be viewed in the PUBLISHED WORKS - 1 Gallery, or see below:

    KRITURZ - 1 KRITURZ - 2

Artwork:  Kriturz ©1978, Rick Grimes.

2)  Regarding Grimes' work in Larry Loc's DOG*STAR FUNNIES #2:  the two characters (the Acid Dwarf and Cowpie) as featured in "Halfbaked Hockey" were created by Larry Loc; not Rick Grimes. My apologies to Larry and Rick for such mistakes.

3)  Below is a comparision piece featuring Grimes' "Elly" demon and Clive Barker's 'demon', as featured in Steve Bissette's TABOO issues #1 and #2:

     ELLY & DEMON

Artwork:  Elly ©1977, Rick Grimes.  Demon drawing © 1988, Clive Barker.

GRIMES:  "My back cover ("Elly"), (named after the partly visible label of a jelly jar), I believe I'd actually already done that summer before the second class came. Quieter. Not at my usual board. It had nothing to do with anything or anyone but putting the ugly 'warning' thing on paper. All very purifying. Remember Joe saw it. And Ernie and his girlfriend. It didn't even bother me like it might've once.

"The sick demonic head with its cat whiskers and baline 'teeth' harks back to some really disturbing creature on a Marvel Monster magazine cover painting, possibly year or two before Parade of Gore or Kubert school in their monster boom of the mid seventies. I don't have the magazine anymore because it bothered me! This big hell beast with a really nasty, soul-snuffing leer. Believe it was their first or second larger sized, retooled, version of "HAUNT OF HORROR" which had been their text digest. Soon after, it folded."  -- December 22nd, 2008.

February 16th, 2009

1)  First, I would like to thank 3-D computer animator and animation educator (and an old friend of Grimes), Larry Loc, for kindly mentioning this Rick Grimes fan site (with regards to Larry's DOG*STAR FUNNIES zines, on his own site - http://www.agni-animation.com/blog/index.html - on February 12th, 2009 (entitled, Q.B. Student Dazes). Larry's piece as such can now be read below (with Grimes's "Halfbaked Hockey"):

"I just found out about this fan site out of the web dedicated to my old friend Rick Grimes. They emailed me and ask for info on a zine I published years ago. Rick and I went to the Kubert School together and I published a couple of Xerox zines with him because I dug his stuff, DogStar Funnies No. 1 and No. 2 by name.

"Here is one of Rick`s pages from issue No. 2. It features 2 of my characters drawn by Rick, the Acid Dwarf and Cowpie. Maybe I will dig out all the pages and let them post them."  -- (© 2009, Larry Loc).

- Many thanks to Larry for kindly mentioning this site as such, and for patiently replying to my emails, etc. Your help is much appreciated.

February 11th, 2009

1)  Three more Grimes strips ("Clem Clambeau", "Frickles", and "Penny Boo"), as originally featured in Rick Veitch's RARE BIT FIENDS, have now been added to the PUBLISHED WORKS - 4 gallery.

2)  Regarding Ron Zalme's November 8th, 2008 comments as featured in the COMMENTS section, Rick passed on this bit of information (January 25th, 2009):

GRIMES:  "I actually sat in a corner, tucked beside Veitch and opposite Ed Foley. I never really thought about us being in the living room and so forth. He has all that right."  -- Rick Grimes (January 25th, 2009).

3)  In the original list of Q & A inquiries I sent Rick back in late December '08, he signed off with the following note:

"As they say in the movie Greaser's Palace, "Tell ugly ol' Heiny Hole I said 'Hello'."  -- Rick Grimes (December 8th, 2009).

- So, here for your 'pleasure' are three excerpts from writer-director Robert Downey Sr.'s 1972 cult classic, Greaser's Palace:

February 4th, 2009

1)  The following items may possibly be added to the site over the coming weeks and months:

- new/current art pages; and/or single images
scans of flyers Grimes sent to friends (in the '90s)
- notebook samples (early '80s)
- early Puzz Fundles or other childhood drawings
- further text pieces
- four or five Weird Dick drawings (pencil and ballpoint) by fellow Kubert Art School classmates (inc. Veitch and Loc).
- three caricatures of fellow Kubert School students, for assignment ( inc. Steve, Cara Sherman, and Mark DeMicco)
- a couple of '80s-era photos of Grimes characters that
- Rick made into 'food' (Sicky Claws cookies, Cow Sow made of dough)
- list of LOST ARTWORK

2)  The following piece was initially going to have it's own page on this site, though I am instead posting it here for the time being (in block form, sorry):

GRIMES:  "That catalog (THE SUPERHERO BOOK OF GOODIES - April 1977) is truly insignificant to me. The others did the lion's share of the work. I avoided it as much as possible. For what it amounted to, the clamor around it all was rather repellent. I remember redrawing, a littler version of, Kirk and Spock from some product, posters I guess. Maybe that gives me a wallpaint crevice in the Trekkie Hall of Fame.

SBG - April 1977  WORLD'S FINEST #106 (1959)  WORLD'S FINEST #1 (1978, reissue)

"The only type of junk like that I ever actually enjoyed was in the summer (?) of '77 before the above? (One of the others might know). Before the second year crowd had come. There weren't many of us around. As I remember it. We worked at different tables than usual. Nightwork on pasteups for a "World's Finest" paperback reissue of old Superman and Batman stories. They had to be cut up from phototransfer paper versions and refitted for two-panel paperback pages via pasteup. We each had a story. Ben Ruiz and I think Ernie Pasanen were there. Not only does it border on 'destruction of art' you can play 'stickerbook' or read the cornball stories 'if' you get bored. A life of that I could not do. But it was sort of fun, then, as those things go. There wasn't alot of pressure about. My' story was a Batman - Robin - Superman fracas in a museum display of giant microscope, magnifying glass and oil can. "The Duplicate Man" ©1959. I did nothing more than minor touchups and panel rearrangements. Of course, we never were given copies of it. It didn't come out 'til 1978 according to the copy I found quite some years later in a used book shop in Shreveport. Who did the original story I'm sure some buff would easily discover. The artwork is clean and clear with a slight manic humour, all of which was and is reassuringly easier for me to 'learn' from."  -- Rick Grimes (December 22nd, 2008)

3)  Found out earlier today that Grimes' "The Puzz Fundles" strip has now been re-published in an Italian edition of Rick Veitch's THE ONE, published by COMMA 22. Visit Veitch's official website to purchase a copy of the English edition, here:  www.rickveitch.com/.

4)  The influence for the 'wall arms' as featured in Grimes's 1976 strip, "Weird Dick and The Professor" (MANTICORE #1): Jean Cocteau's 1946 classic film, La Belle et la bête (aka Beauty and The Beast).

5)  A very brief comment regarding Grimes' "Puzz Fundles" from 2000 AD Forums' TordelBack (February 2nd, 2009):

"I always thought Rick Grimes was just Rick Veitch being clever, particularly Puzz Fundles. Every day's a school day ('cept when it's a snow day!)"

6)  Even more madness... the inspiration for Grimes's strip, "Breathing For Sissies", as feat. in 1992's TABOO #7 (see PUBLISHED WORKS - 3 section on this site):

1)  Added one page from Rick's unpublished "The Usual" strip, and one full-page illustration of Rick's "sick animal" (circa 1994) to the OTHER WORKS section.

2)  The following December 22nd 2008 Grimes comments, regarding "Sicky Claws Conquers the Weird Dicks", were initially meant to appear on the DR. WIRTHAM'S COMIX & STORIES page, prior to this fan site being published as such. Here now, is the first bit of what I accidentally left out (my apologies to Rick for this slip up):

GRIMES:  "There are a few 'in-jokes', so far 'in' my friends probably didn't even see them: Larry Loc is running a train engine in an early panel, with other links to him on the train. The 'Guncy' character, just as it says on the plywood's graffiti was a Veitch doodle. One that I kept and gave name to for this story. But, Peg Arms, especially featured on one page, was a character Bissette created the first year of the school. (He was not unlike the freak spread Greg Irons had in Deviant Slice, which I had not seen at that time). He sent the comic page (s) to someone then, and no longer has it, he once told me. So, I brought him back myself! Note the little sign sticking in his 'hip' crediting Bissette...  -- Rick Grimes (December 22nd, 2008) - the rest of this piece can be read on the DR. WIRTHAM'S COMIX & STORIES page.

January 27th, 2009

1)  Added a page for the 1977 Kubert Art School Yearbook / Zine, PARADE OF GORE #1. "POG" features three Rick Grimes contributions, including: a text story, "The Seed of Shock"; and the first-ever publication of full-page pin-up, "Elly" (later republished in 1989's TABOO #2). My thanks to Tom Foxmarnick for passing on this mag (along with '76's MANTICORE #1) to Mike Sterling, who in turn was kind enough to send me scans of Grimes's work from both zines. Thank you both!

2)  I would also like to thank Steve Bissette for kindly announcing this site on his daily MYRANT blog at www.srbissette.com website, on January 22nd, 2009. Much appreciated, Steve!

Hello and welcome to the Rick Grimes fan site!

Where do I begin? Well, I will start by saying that I personally am not going to say too much on the subject of Cartoonist/Artist/Writer Rick Grimes's strips/stories and what they mean to me, as I feel that my opinion is both irrelevant and blatantly obvious, as this tribute site with is all the proof you need of that. I will however say (and stress) that this IS only a 'fan' site, though it does indeed have the blessing and participation of the Grimes himself, and should therefore be considered an, er..., "Official" fan site, or something... Anyway, I will let both the shrinee (?) and his work here speak for itself. One last thing; I am no "writer" of any sort, therefore please excuse the obvious and no doubt constant typos, grammatical errors and downright ineptness of my own writing on this site, thank you.

Now, the main reason behind the creation of this non-profit unofficial fan site is so that fans and those curious about Grimes can now learn more about the elusive and frustratingly underrated and overlooked work of "cartoonist extraordinaire", Rick Grimes.

As mentioned on the HOME/ABOUT page, you will find on this non-profit unofficial fan site the following sections/pages: a regularly updated (when possible) NEWS/UPDATES section; a comprehensive BIOGRAPHY / BIBLIOGRAPHY; a PUBLISHED WORKS Gallery (featuring published strips and stories, covers, etc.), a COMMENTS section (with memories/stories/comments from fellow artists and fans); a section for OTHER WORKS (ie Unpublished or Undeveloped strips/stories/art); three pages of other RECOMMENDED Cartoonists & Painters; Authors/Writers; Films and TV; and Music worth checking out; a SUBSCRIBE section; and finally, the usual assorted LINKS, THANKS / DISCLAIMER, and E-MAIL pages.

With regards to the Rick Grimes's artwork as featured on this NON-PROFIT fan site, I have personally been granted permission (via hand-written letter) to host Rick's work as featured on the various pages of this site. Please see the THANKS / DISCLAIMER page for further information.

Thanks to the following people for their help and assistance (in various forms) with this site: Stephen R. Bissette, Rick Veitch, Jed Alexander, Sam Kujava, Ron Zalme, Mark Martin, Mike Sterling, Jay Kinney, Joe Kubert, Sir Real, Jim Wheelock, Mark Patterson, Sam Kujava and of course, to the man himself - Rick Grimes. Anyway... enjoy the site!

FIRST NEWS POST

-- On December 15th, 2008 (Australia), I received a handwritten reply from Rick, after writing him via post the previous fortnight, with news that he would try to help out in some way and "contribute regularly" with this fan site. Here is that reply:

Ryan!
Got your package day after Thanksgiving, the 28th.
Would love to contribute regularly.
Busily gathering additions and writing and xeroxes.
Will try to get it all out to you before xmas.
Look forward to it.
Enjoy your summer,
Grimes

Then, I received another message (this time a mammoth package!) on December 30th, 2008. To receive the prior kind reply was one thing, but this was most unexpected. What I was sent by Rick covers everything regarding his art, full stop. Rick's 90-page reply to my Q & A inquiry now appears on this site in various sections, followed by: -- 'Rick Grimes (December 22nd, 2008)'. Throughout this passages, you'll find quite a few surprises and pretty much everything you've ever wanted to know about Rick and his art, not to mention news on future projects and further site contributions.

So, great news for us Grimes fans! I hope those reading this enjoy the site for what it is, and I will do my best (with Rick's help) to further improve on the content, information, and so forth when and if possible. Enjoy!
