DAYMARES (summer 1976)

 DAYMARES (1976)

Artwork © 2010, Rick Grimes.

GRIMES:  "First use of Weird Dick in strip. Other characters added to notes of January 'Professor' dream. The principals for this Winsor McKay inspired 'failure'.

"With 'cast' drawings wisely dark-pencilled rather than inked, submitted as part of mailing to Joe Kubert. Late summer. He calls me on the phone and accepts me as student on the potential and imagination of the above.

"The Daymares page itself depicts two of the earlier characters getting on Charon's raft and then going down our bathroom sink drain. [Exit a lesser idea]. Pull back, there are the Professor and Weird Dick. (More diminutive). They say nothing and walk away.

"'Primitive' logo put in years later."  -- Rick Grimes (April 17th, 2009).
